Air Guns

There are three basic ways that air guns such as air pistols and air rifles obtain power. They use carbon dioxide, spring pistons, or pneumatics to propel ammunition. Some require cocking or pumping before pulling the trigger, others do not. The carbon dioxide, or CO2, models do not need to be cocked before pulling the trigger. They do require containers of CO2, which is means operating them is somewhat more costly. A spring piston air gun must be cocked before firing. The spring is compressed during cocking and decompressed once the trigger pulled. There is more than one type of pneumatic air gun. There is the single stroke design and the multi-stroke. A single stroke air gun need only be cocked. Multi-stroke styles must be pumped. Minimal pumping allows enough pressure for short-range shoots, while for longer ranges more pumping is required to create enough air pressure. Pellet guns and BB guns can cause serious injury. An air gun, like any other gun, must be used responsibly.

The most common types of air guns

  • Airsoft

  • For those who are new to airsoft, these guns shoot 6mm round pellets commonly known as "BBs." They travel at speeds between 400-700 feet per second {ft/sec} and although a bit painful when hit by one of these pellets, they cannot kill someone nor cause heavy-bleeding injuries unlike real guns. Even though airsoft is considered a toy gun, safety precautions should still be taken into account when playing with these guns.

  • CO2

  • CO2 is Carbon Dioxide. Basically CO2 boils from a liquid state to a gas as the airgun is charged. Gaseous C02 propels the projectile when the air gun is fired. That pressure is sufficiently high to drive pellets at approximately 600-700 ft/sec making the rifles powerful enough for use in hunting small species. CO2 rifles are not suitable for kids but more for young teenagers.

  • Nitro Piston

  • Welcome to the new world of break barrel gas piston mechanism. At the heart of this new technological break-through is a nitrogen filled gas piston instead of a coiled steel spring. Nitro Piston gives velocities up to 1000 ft/sec at these speeds these guns can be very dangerous, they have to be handled with extreme care.

  • Pneumatic

  • A pneumatic gun propels a projectile with compressed air stored in the gun. There are three main types of pneumatics – precharged, multi-pump and single-stroke. A precharged gun has a air tank built into the gun that is filled with air from a compressor or manual pump. It can shoot many times before it needs to be refilled. Lots of airgunners like the multi-pump pneumatic because its air reservoir is filled with a built-in air pump. To fill the gun with compressed air, you work the pump handle one or more times. Because it’s a multi-pump, you usually give it more than one pump for each shot. This type of pneumatic has lots of fans because you don’t have to take any other equipment with you – it’s all built into the gun! Single-strokes are just that – pneumatic guns that are pumped just one time for each shot.

Water Skis

Water skiing can be a fun family outdoor activity, but without the right equipment, water skiing can be a lot less enjoyable and even dangerous. Make sure you have a certified life vest at all times when skiing. Try to choose less bulky, lightweight designs. Water skiing is an outdoor sport that is easy for many beginners to learn, yet also allows experienced riders the freedom to try new tricks. Water skiing gloves are a good idea to aid your grip, and in cold areas a light wetsuit is advised. Water skies are sized by weight, so make sure you have the right size of water skies to make your water skiing outing more enjoyable.

Three disciplines of water skiing

  • Slalom skiing

  • There are a couple of different types of skis to choose from. Combination pairs are the most common and easiest skis to learn with. They have wider tips for better control. Slalom skis, used for skiing with one ski, are good for making sharp turns and going faster. Beginner slalom skis have wider tails and flat bottoms to make it easier to get up and stay straight. But intermediate and advanced skis feature tapered tails, beveled edges and a concave bottom. Although they're more difficult to use, once you get the hang of them, you'll go faster and make sharper turns.

  • Trick skiing

  • Trick skiing has been described as the most technical of the three disciplines of water skiing. Trick skis are used for jumping, spinning and doing tricks (hence the name). They're short and wide with no fins. This makes them more difficult to control but easier to turn and slide At this level water skiing becomes a whole different kind of excitement.

  • Ski Jumping

  • Water ski jumpers use two long skis to ride over a water ski jump in an attempt to travel the longest distance. Skiers may choose their boat speed and ramp height, although there are maximums based the skier's gender and age. As a jumper approaches the ramp they will zigzag behind the boat in a series of cuts to generate speed and angle. When the jumper hits the ramp they will generally be going over 112 kilometres per hour (70 mph) and the load they have generated on the rope can be over 600 kilograms (1,300 lb). This may not be for everybody, but it defiantly be a rush.


    Although a relatively new outdoor water sport the popularity of wakeboarding is growing fast and it has already surged past water skiing as the coolest way to ride the water by motorboat power. Wake boarding is less concerned with speed than with tricks. These tricks are performed both on the water surface and in the air, and using the wake from the boat. The most spectacular tricks are collectively known as inverts, and are usually performed by launching oneself into the air in an inverse position. All that is required from potential wakeboarders is a reasonable level of fitness, fairly strong arms and a willingness to get wet and make a fool of oneself getting to grips with it. It can be somewhat intimidating to begin with, but after basic instruction it is relatively easy to get the hang of.

    The three parts of a wakeboard

    • The board

    • To begin, we have the board itself. It can be longer or shorter, wider or narrower. This may not seem like a huge deal, but the shape of the board does matter. A longer board will be more stable, easier to maneuver. However the board will not be as agile. For that, a rider would want a shorter thin board. Conversely, a longer wider board is incredibly safe, and perfectly suited for a novice rider. This board is incredibly stable, and while it lacks the agility of a small board, it is perfect somebody just learning how to ride. The shape and dimensions of a board are the first way to classify the types of wakeboards.

    • The fins

    • Next we have the fins. The fins promote stability in the board, and help keep the board heading straight. Fin placement can range from wide to thin, and the fins themselves can be longer or shorter. Wide fins allow for greater stability, but make turns more difficult, while tighter fins lower stability but make the board easier to handle. The size of the fins also plays a huge role. Longer fins will allow for easier turning and control, but will increase friction resulting in lowered maximum speed. Smaller fins will lower the amount of control, but will decrease the amount of friction resulting in a higher max speed. Fins play a crucial role when deciding between the various types of wakeboards.

    • The rocker

    • Lastly, we have the rocker. The rocker is the bottom side of the board. It determines how the board handles the water itself. A rocker can either be higher or lower. A higher rocker means the board has more of a curve, and can easily land after a trick. A higher rocker is suited more for tricks and jumps, or shaky conditions. Conversely, a lower rocker means the board is more flat. This reduces friction, resulting in faster acceleration and increased max speed. The rocker is incredibly important when choosing the between the various types of wakeboards.
